General Information

NEW GENERATION WATER TAXI

Designer, Dr. Albert Nazarov, FRINA, CEng, MSNAME, is Managing Director of Thailand-based ‘Albatross Marine Design’ which has designed over 50 one-off and production catamaran models that are in service worldwide. Below he explains more about the RC12 as a “new generation water taxi”.

The RC12m represents the further development of our European Product Design Gold Award winning 10m water taxi.

The priority has been to design an affordable, light, airy and spacious water taxi that is safe, comfortable, practical and easy to maintain.

The RC12 is highly efficient and offers environmentally friendly optional hybrid or electric propulsion with solar energy. The design also takes into consideration low wave and low noise making to help minimize negative impacts in operating areas.

Catamarans feature 30-50 per cent lower vertical accelerations and shocks compared to monohull craft of similar size. The RC12 design further ensures passengers enjoy a very comfortable stable motion at speeds of up to 15-20kts (depending on the propulsion system selected).

The RC12 is at home operating in the choppy conditions of estuaries, harbors and major rivers where there is a lot of traffic. In addition, the vessel is highly maneuverable in tight areas due to wide separation of the propulsion units.

Passengers who need to board using a wheelchair are also catered for. There are designated wheelchair zones on the RC12 with adjacent seats for accompanying persons.

Safety is paramount and the boat complies to ISO Small Craft Standards for Category C and can be built to specific National regulations as required.

The structure is composite sandwich with carbon reinforcements.

Catamarans Vs monohulls

Catamarans hold a number of advantages over monohulls in commercial and leisure options, including:

  • A softer ride: catamarans provide 30-50 per cent lower “vertical accelerations” on seaway (less “slamming” over swells)
  • The usable length of craft being larger
  • High stability
  • Higher survivability if the hulls are damaged
  • Small “heel” angles at turn
  • Comfortable seating, more space per passenger; and
  • Safe evacuation routes.

In terms of market share, 60-70 per cent of all passenger high speed craft are catamarans.

Rapido Catamarans (RC), a subsidiary of Rapido Trimarans Limited, is marketing a range of commercial catamarans which are designed by Albatross Marine Design (AMD) and built exclusively by Triac Composites.

AMD is a leading Asian-based design office specialising in naval architecture and engineering of small and high speed for craft commercial special and recreational applications with special expertise in design of catamarans and composite structures.

AMD has been recognised with the European Product Design Award in 2019.

RT12 – Designed for tourism, resorts and as the perfect water taxi commuter vessel

South East Asia, in particular, has a myriad of rivers and canals criss-crossing their way across cities. Often, with too few bridges, these rivers are the great obstacle for commuters attempting to reach their destination by road in a timely manner.

However, while some view the rivers as obstacles and hindrances, others view them as the solution. Fast and efficient passage to your destination enjoying the scenery rather than suffering the stress of snarling traffic jams.

AMD has some designs for water taxis as per below.

Free trade agreements make Vietnam particularly attractive

Vietnam has been working hard to increase its level of competitiveness on the world stage.

Already, Vietnam is a signatory to 12 free trade agreements and is currently negotiating another seven which is good news for international customers wishing to source products from Vietnam.
